The best history we have says that after the Second World War, gay men discharged from the Armed Forces tended to take up residence in the debarkation port cities of New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. They brought with them the camaraderie of the military experience, the concepts of discipline and service, even surplus equipment like the motorcycles, leather jackets and caps. They lived and loved in secret clubs and dungeons until the liberated days of the 1960's sexual revolution allowed them to emerge. Many folks say, to truly be "old guard", you'd have had to be a part of that original generation. Not true.

By the time the swinging liberation of the sexual revolution found veterans of World War II, they were middle-aged and nearing retirement. Returning veterans seeded the beginnings of the American gay leather culture, but the men who carried it forward were more likely to be returning from the Korean and Vietnam wars. Old Guard philosophy is shared by people of all genders, orientations, and lifestyles.

No doubt there are many factors that came together to give us our present day sense of Old Guard". This Elemental Leatherman workshop will explore the historical roots, as well as current perceptions of what it is to be an Old Guard Leatherman or Leatherwoman. Come join us for what is certain to be a lively and spirited discussion.
